Earls Court

There’s so much fantastic typography all around you, sometimes you just have to look up to see it. This classic signage at Earls Court underground station is a great example of that.

Play

The King Blues, Camden

img_7646

I first saw The King Blues at a small gig in the middle of the afternoon at Komedia in Brighton, years ago and fell in love with them then. A few years later, in November 2011 I saw them play The Roundhouse in Camden, a huge venue in comparison and just around the time ‘Punk & Poetry‘ came out. And just before they imploded and split up.

A few weeks ago we happened to be in London on a Saturday and at a bit of a loose end. I couldn’t believe my luck to find that the band were playing that night, and on their home turf in Camden. It was pretty much a no-brainer, although it was a sold out gig. We went along anyway, hoping to get in and we got lucky. It was a tiny venue, a proper pub gig where you are right up against the stage and the music feels raw and vital. It was a full house and we had a great time – The Fiddlers Elbow is a nice venue, with friendly staff and it’s easy to get a drink. Even managed to wangle a set list and it was only a 10 minute cab ride home to the Montcalm Hotel, where we stayed. Great night.

Paper bags, sweets and cigarettes

You can spot some amazing signage and typography around London if you look carefully enough. This company has been around for over 75 years, I don’t know if this signage dates back that far.

Right arm tattoo

Continued the final piece of the tattoo I’ve been working on for 3 years. This is part of the top of my right arm, and only shows a small part of the rest of the whole outline we did in one session at Modern Classic. I’m sure there will be some more line work to do, once we see how it’s looking – blossom’s and flowers probably.

The piece consists of a beautiful girl head, an hour glass and this heart with a scroll, which is pretty much a direct copy of a tattoo my Dad had when he was 16. I can’t wait to see it all coloured, it’s going to look outrageously good. The only question is, do I conintue with my forearms, but for now there’s a bit of a wait until the next session.

Roman type

Love these typefaces I spotted on our recent trip to Rome. There is something stunning to see every time you turn a corner in Rome, and the typography on some of the shop fronts is no exception. It’s not all old buildings 🙂

2017 – here we come

Ok, so it’s a bit early, but I never like to let the opportunity to buy good stationery go past! I love my Crispin Finn wall planners – I like to buy one every year and can’t wait to start plotting on it all the plans for the coming year. It’s also so good to look back over it and see all the things I did.

I’ve ordered the 2017 version already, unfortuntely I’ve only got enough wall space for one at a time, so it will be a while before I can put it up.

De-stress

These all make perfect sense, though I’m not sure where I’d fit any work in if I did all of these 🙂

I suppose an aim to do at least one a day would be a place to start…

Birthday lunch, English’s, Brighton

We celebrated Madge’s Birthday with Bloody Mary’s, Oysters, Prosecco and seafood. Just as it should be! His restaurant of choice was English’s in Brighton – always a favourite for us, especially sat at the bar.

Travel

48-hours in Barcelona

We took Madge’s boys to Barcelona for a weekend. Lots of tapas, walking and a bit of sightseeing. The weather was really pleasant and it meant we could sit outside for drinks and chill out. The boys have never been to Barcelona before, so it was good to take them somewhere that was at least a little familiar to us.

We found an amazing sweet shop called Happy Pills – think posh pick and mix, but more fun.

We also drank fresh juice on the beach, and lit a candle in a cathdral.

I went and got my nails done and sneaked off for a cheeky plate of ham and glass of wine at the bar of a cool tapas place.

And of course we ate helados, one of my very favourite things.

Every time I go back to Barcelona there’s more to see, or new places to go. I love it, and will definitely be going back AGAIN.
